A Bookish Fangirl Friday!

Happy Birthday to Juliette Binoche! Happy one day early Birthday to Jon Hamm and Rick Rubin!

I've been doing a lot of reading lately, and man, have I struck gold. The first book that blew me away was:

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith (Click image for Goodreads page)

Such a lovely story. I will definitely be adding other books by this author to my TBR pile. This is exactly what it's supposed to be. A love story. The characters are deep and well-developed even though the story only happens in maybe 2 days. Worth the read if you're into love stories and cute British boys.

And just because it's fun to look at covers and especially those from other countries, here's a few for this book.

Next:

The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross (Click image for Goodreads page)

This book totally pulled me in. I'm not a big steampunk girl. For the longest time, I just didn't get it. It was just another trend that wasn't for me. And I'm not saying that now, after reading this book, I'm going to turn my laptop into a geared-out monstrosity complete with multiple screen magnifying glasses. But I do have a better understanding of the genre? trend? vibe? And I'd read more steampunk as long as it's good (like Pullman's His Dark Materials books). Plus, I am looking forward to the next book big time and Kady Cross told me on Twitter that book 3 will soon be in the works, so, YAY!

Why did I like this book so much? The writing was wonderful, of course, and all the characters were unique and intriguing. Only once or twice did I find the story slightly predictable, but then Cross would turn something on it's head and I'd quickly forget that I figured out who the bad guy was. So, yeah, another awesome series that I can't wait to read the next ones and that I highly recommend.

I could only find one other cover for this book:

German
In Harry Potter news, it looks like Pottermore has finally worked out its kinks and will be opening for everyone in April. Thank Merlin!

And now I leave you with something that makes me do my snorty, crying laugh (I know the quality is bad, but it's the best I could find):

  1. LOVED Steel Corset! I, like you, didn't know much about steampunk but now I've been slowly getting into it. I can't wait for Clockwork Collar.

Have you read The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare? It's the prequel to her Mortal Instruments series (also awesome). There's Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince. Not as over the top steampunk as Steel Corset but lots of clockwork craziness.

I just finished DEARLY, DEPARTED which is Steampunk New Victorian set in the future with zombies. It's insane and awesome and I can't recommend it enough. I thought there were too many POVs but the two main characters - Bram and Nora are fantastically written.

    1. I haven't read the Infernal Devices. I read the first Mortal Instruments book and skimmed the rest just to see what happened(the whole "could be related" thing turned me off, unfortunately). Thanks for the rec on Dearly, Departed! That does sound awesome! Will have to pick it up!

  2. I love looking at the covers from different countries and markets, I think it's so interesting how the cover reflects the mood of books.

    1. I know, right? It's also neat to see what sells in other countries and how it's different from our own. I have noticed a lot of English covers that are graphic (not, like, lewd graphic but drawn graphic, lol) and I wish that would take hold here in the US because I love those.
